A little self-indulgence is in order:

Despite the negative connotations, I've found that high school seniors have a difficult time focusing on themselves while writing their college application essays. Writing about an event, another person, or a favourite activity is sometimes more interesting than writing about your own personality, interests, or eccentricities. What you've written thus far has been essays based on books you've read or concepts you've learned. The time has come to turn inside. Don't get caught up in obsessive thoughts about your sport practise schedule, your favourite grandparent, or the community service project you did last summer. If you want to talk about yourself, you may utilise these people or experiences as a starting point. Are you a good coworker or a bad one? Is it because of your grandfather that you've always carried a harp with you? Your interest in social issues has grown as a result of your service tour; is this passion now driving your academic studies? The sport, grandparent, or trip itself is not the best place to focus your attention. For more info, please visit

It's all about the details:

When it comes to researching a topic for your college essay, I believe you have two options: either go broad or go deep. So, as an example, let's say that you've always like going to museums, and your high school art history course was the catalyst for this passion. If you'd like, you may then list your favourite artists. There are a lot of people interested in this. Alternately, you may obsess over the work of Edward Hopper. Perhaps you'd want to express your admiration for his ability to weave a complete story out of a small cast of seemingly insignificant individuals, so you could write about how they make you feel. You may write on how Hopper's work has inspired your own story. That's a lot of work. There is a clear winner here. Many individuals like museums and can name a few artists they appreciate because they focus on the details. Edward Hopper is a subject that few people have the time or inclination to study in depth.

Write down your thoughts while you're saying them:

Why would you submit a collection of essays written in a formal, sombre tone if your family, friends, and teachers all describe you as hilarious, gregarious, and unrestrained? Also, introverts: if you're more reserved in person, reflect it in your writing.) College essays may also benefit from thoughtfulness, consideration, and an unpretentious tone! Many college essayists want to tell me exactly how they feel about themselves. If your friends describe you as humorous and outgoing, you can't simply tell me that. If you want me to consider you for admission, your written tone must mirror your spoken one. I'm imagining the person who will join us in the fall if we approve your application by reading through your essays. You must include examples of this person's persona. To do this, don't simply rely on what you say, but also how you say it.
